NAIL TERM GLOSSARY


Our nail term glossary is a resource provided to our customers which offers simple definitions for various terms used in reference to nail care.

DEFINITION

Ear Coning/Candling

Ear Candling, or Ear Coning is practice of placing cone-shaped candle in the ear. When the candle is lighted it creates vacuum and ear wax is extracted from the ear canal.

 

 

Eczema

Skin condition characterized by itchy, red, OR dry skin usually caused by inflammation.

 

 

Edema

Edema is swelling of body parts due to injury or inflammation.

 

 

Edge Nails

Edge Nails are nail art with square base and tip that looks like a rooftop.

 

 

Eggshell Nails

Eggshell Nails is a nail condition in which nails become soft and thin causing them to bend or break.

 

 

Electric File

An electric file is a drill machine used in nail salons. It is used in manicure and pedicure to shape nails faster with precision.

 

 

Embed

Embedding is nail art in which decorative things such as mini decorative flowers are encased in between layers of gel or acrylic.

 

 

Embellishment

Embellishment is nail art in which glitter, pigments etc. are added to nail enhancements.

 

 

Emery Board

A nail file made up of cardboard with coating of abrasive.

 

 

Enamel

Nail polishes with a higher film forming degree are called enamels.

 

 

Enhancement

Enhancement refers to adding of artificial nail over the natural nail.

 

 

Enzyme

Enzymes are biological catalysts, that accelerate chemical reactions. In beauty industry they are used as exfoliants.

 

 

EPA (Environmental Protection Agency)

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is an independent executive agency of the United States federal government tasked with environmental protection matters.

 

 

EPA-Registered Disinfectant

Disinfectant registered with the Environmental Protection Agency to ensure that the product adheres to all applicable federal environmental safety regulations.

 

 

Epidermis

The uppermost layer of skin to which nail is attached.

 

 

Eponychium

Eponychium OR cuticle is the layer of skin surrounding fingernails.

 

 

Ergonomics

Ergonomics is arranging furniture in nail salons in such a way that it is comfortable for both the nail technician and the client.

 

 

Essential Oil

Essential Oils are oil extracted from plant seeds or any other part of the plant that is having therapeutic properties of the plant.

 

 

Esters

Ester is a chemical compound derived from an acid, except nail polishes all nail coating products contain esters.

 

 

Esthetician

A professional whose specialty is to improve the aesthetics of the skin. 

 

 

Esthetics

Also known as Aesthetic, is the application of various techniques and products to the outermost layer of skin to beautify it.

 

 

Etch

Etch is a method of preparing a nail by using a heavy hand with rough file 80-100, resulting in irreparable damage to nails.

 

 

Ethyl Methacrylate (EMA)

Ethyl Methacrylate is monomer that is used to create artificial nail enhancements.

 

 

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus is a tree originally native to Australia, now grown all over the World, due in part to their medicinal properties.

 

 

Exfoliate

Using any safe substance to remove top layer of skin

 

 

Exfoliative Keratolysis

Exfoliative Keratolysis is a generally mild, but occasionally painful skin condition characterized by peeling skin of the palms and soles. It is often misdiagnosed as chronic contact dermatitis or psoriasis.

 

 

Exothermic

A reaction that accompanies the release of heat. Many nail enhancement treatments are exothermic in nature, that is they release heat when product is applied.
