NAIL TERM GLOSSARY

Our nail term glossary is a resource provided to our customers which offers simple definitions for various terms used in reference to nail care.

TERM	DEFINITION
Tacky Layer	Layer of partially dried & sticky gel on the nail.
TAF Resin	TAF resin is used as adhesive and nail hardener and thickener.
Tape Manicure	A nail art that uses striping tape to cover the areas that are not intended to be polished, thus creating a unique art.
Tea Tree Oil	Tea tree oil is extracted by the steam distillation of fresh leaves and wood from tea tree shrubs. Because of its antibacterial and antifungal properties, it is used in manicure and pedicure.
Teabagging	The process of applying teabags to nails to cure them.
Temperature	A measure of the warmth or coldness.
Terbinafine	An antifungal used to treat nail infections.
Terminal Hair	Thick, long, pigmented hair on the body.
Terry's Nails	A condition in which nails appear white.
Texture	Nail finish that looks textured (rough or uneven surface).
Thermal Nail Polish	Nail polish which changes color with temperature.
Thixotropic	Thixotropic gels or liquids liquefy when they are shaken and return to their original state after being allowed to stand.
Threshold Limit Value	Maximum amount of a substance in the air that a person may be exposed to without any harmful effects.
Tinea Pedis	A fungal infection between the toes.
Tinea Unguium	Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nail, resulting in brittle and discolored nails.
Tip Cutter	Salon equipment used to cut the tip of nails.
Tip Overlay	Use of plastic tip enhancement products.
Tip Pull	When the topcoat draws or shrinks back the polish from the edges.
Tip Wear	When the polish at the tip of the nails wear away.
Titanium Dioxide	It is used as colorant in nail polishes.
Toluene	A colorless, water-insoluble, flammable liquid used in nail polishes.
Toner	Toner is a cosmetic lotion that shrink pores and cleanses the skin.
Top Coat	Top Coat is transparent coat applied over the nail polish to seal it.
Topper	Topper is a nail polish that is worn over others as a top coat and is usually loaded with glitter and polka dots.
Toughness	The ability of bending or absorbing energy without breaking.
Toxic	Poisonous substance.
Toxic Trio	Toxic Trio refers to use of Toulene, Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP) & Formaldehyde as ingredients in nail products.
Toxicity	The quality of being toxic.
Trachyonychia	A nail disorder characterized by rough or ridged nails.
Tradeshow	An exhibition for companies of a particular industry to demonstrate and sell their products.
Tray for Manicure	A tray used to hold the manicure equipment.
Tuberculocidal	Anything that can kill mycobacterium tuberculosis.
Tweezers	Small tools used to pick or pluck things.
